Could Marissa Mayer Be (Gulp!) Right? The Argument of Creativity vs. Productivity

If you had to pick one, what’s more important to your career and company success right now–-productivity or creativity?

What if you’re the sixth CEO (in five years) of a troubled high tech firm in an era when your competitors’ new innovations are driving profit, reputation, and opportunity, almost overnight?

Then you might have done what Marissa Mayer did. Whether you like it or not. Read More →

Do You Have to Be a Champion to Succeed?

Champion . . . winner . . excellence .  .  .  if you’re like most of the world catching Olympic fever, words like this are coming at you as frequently as a Ryan Seacrest reference to Justin Bieber.

Yes, for the next few weeks, our digital devices will be overrun with emotion-generating stories of superhuman efforts and long-cultivated ability. For some, those stories might inspire and motivate. For others, though, they’re a downer.

A downer? How? How can our quadrennial celebration of sweat and accomplishment take us down rather than lift us up?

It’s not because we’re a community of lazy couch potatoes–really. It’s because we know that the price to be a champion is high—and we think it’s more than we have.    Read More →

Is It the Culture? Or Is It You?

(Listen to this article here.)

After more than 4000 private phone calls were illegally hacked by News of the World reporters (causing a scandal that shut down the high-circulation, highly profitable newspaper) journalist Carl Bernstein quoted an employee who said that media baron Rupert Murdoch “invented and established this culture in the newsroom, where you do whatever it takes to get the story, take no prisoners, Read More →

Whatever Happened to Independence Day?

Whatever Happened to Independence Day?

Our favorite summer celebration is here again–Independence Day. Maybe you know it by its more famous moniker, “July 4th.”

Somehow, all this talk about the date–but not the holiday–rings flat to me. Whatever happened to saying “Happy Independence Day”? How did we lose the battle of the words? I’ve developed five theories:

Listening to the Whispers

Listening to the Whispers

“Your life is always speaking to you,” said TV’s favorite teacher, Oprah Winfrey, as she closed out her 25 years of daytime television today. Of all the lessons she’s shared over the years, my favorite from today was to notice the whispers, the murmurs, the soft messages that we all have and hear–but don’t always notice.

I heard the whispers for years. At first, they were soft, so soft that the buzz of my Blackberry would drown them out. Then they got louder and louder, and while I tried to cover them up with Read More →
